About this place

St. Columban Parish in Chillicothe, Missouri is a historic Catholic community with roots dating back to 1857. Founded by Father John J. Hogan, who later became the first Bishop of the Diocese of Saint Joseph, the parish has long served as a spiritual and educational hub for the local area. The current church building, dedicated in 1879, is a striking example of Gothic architecture, modeled after the Ulm Münster Cathedral in Germany. Its reddish-colored bricks were sourced from a local plant, and the native stone used in the foundation was hauled by horses and wagons from nearby Utica.

Visitors to the church will find a sanctuary rich in traditional Catholic imagery and symbolism. The interior features high, vaulted ceilings and pointed arches designed to draw the eyes toward heaven. Notable artistic details include hand-carved wood altars, thirty-two statues, and several murals originally painted in 1913. A significant restoration in 2017 brought much of the interior back to its original 1913 appearance, ensuring the preservation of its ornate shrines and vibrant stained-glass windows for future generations.

Highlights of the parish include:

  • Sacramental Life: Regular Mass schedules throughout the week and weekend, along with opportunities for Reconciliation and Eucharistic Adoration.

  • Historic Architecture: A well-preserved Gothic structure with local historical significance and meticulously restored interior artwork.

  • Educational Legacy: Connection to the Bishop Hogan Memorial School, which carries on the parish’s long-standing commitment to local education.

  • Community Stewardship: Various volunteer opportunities, including “Mary’s Garden” and active parish organizations like the Knights of Columbus (Council 1084).

As one of the oldest parishes in the region, St. Columban remains a steadfast presence in the community. Whether you are visiting to admire the historic craftsmanship or joining the congregation for worship, the parish offers a welcoming environment grounded in long-standing tradition. It serves as a familiar and reliable spiritual home for families and individuals throughout the Chillicothe area.
